Our Holiday Lighting Tips

Posted on Dec 19, 2017 by admin

It's the most wonderful time of the year, or so the famous song goes…but we're willing to bet that you can make it even BETTER if you give some thought to your lighting.

Here are a few of our tried and true holiday lighting tips that are sure to make your parties and family get-togethers even merrier.

  1. Plug in your light strings before you begin decorating. Testing them first is a smart strategy because having to unstring most of your handiwork to replace a burned out bulb will not leave you feeling joyful.

  1. Do a dry run. A night or so before the big party, walk through the house and see if the lighting poses any issues. Venture outside as well, checking for any hazards your guests might encounter on their way to your front door. Replace burned out lamps and make sure that pathways are illumi
nated. (Check out some other exterior lighting strategies here.)

Dim to Warm LED: Yes, It is Possible

Posted on Nov 03, 2017 by admin

Nothing beats the cozy, warm vibe that traditional incandescent lamps give off as they dim. Unfortunately, a regular dimmable LED lamp can't produce this same effect.

The good news? There is a solution: warm dim technology—an LED fixture or bulb that has white and amber LED chips inside. When you dim these bulbs, the amber chips incandesce and dim as the white chips dim, producing that warm glow we all love.

Why use warm dim?

  • Perfect for entertaining. Warm light is welcoming light and helps put people at ease. So adding warm dim to fixtures in your dining room and other entertaining spaces is a smart strategy.

Wolfers Lighting Spotlight: Meet Timothy Carroll

Posted on Oct 22, 2017 by admin

We're starting a new feature on our blog where you can get to know our lighting experts a little better. This way, when you walk into one of our showrooms, you might feel like you're approaching someone you already know rather than a "sales person."

We tend to avoid the word "sales person" anyway, since we're not trying to "sell" you—we want to be partners in your lighting design…that person you can count on to give you great advice when you need it.

First up in our spotlight series is Timothy Carroll. That's him to the right working hard on some lighting design plans.

Timothy is our assistant showroom manager in our Waltham store. He is also an ALA Lighting Specialist and an all-around nice, friendly guy. So definitely say hello when you see him.

Below, we asked Timothy a few quick-hitting questions that will help you get to know him better.

Q: Why lighting? What drew you to the lighting industry?

Timothy: What I love is that the lighting industry is always changing. There's never a dull moment.

Introducing Arnsberg: An Innovative Lighting Manufacturer

Posted on Sep 09, 2017 by admin

We're excited to introduce you to a new lighting manufacturer, Arnsberg.

Founded in Germany by two families with deep experience in the lighting industry, Arnsberg is named after the city of Arnsberg, Germany, an area renowned for its influence on lighting, starting way back in 1830 with petroleum lamps. After the dawn of electricity, the city continued to flourish. Today, it is home to some of the largest lighting companies.

Arnsberg's mission is simple:  to provide "the best lighting available at an affordable price." We love the modern and contemporary stylings of their fixtures—as well as their budget-friendly price points.

Here are some current favorites.

1. Dessau LED Desk Lamp. If you're a fan of sleek lines and contemporary styling, you're going to love the Dessau. Perfect for back to school (or the office), this desk lamp comes in 3000K and offers easy dimming through a handy knob on the base. We keep it stocked in Matte Nickel in both showrooms.

New at Wolfers Lighting: Check Out Our Electronic Shades Display

Posted on Sep 02, 2017 by admin

As you may recall, Wolfers Lighting merged with The Boston Shade Company and System 7 earlier this year. We're thrilled to announce that we've completed our electronic shades display (above) in our Waltham showroom, with Allston to follow.

Our lighting consultants are fielding questions from curious customers who walk into our showrooms thinking "lights," but then they spot the motorized shades. "Hmm," some of them say.

We get it. But here's the thing: when you stop and think about it, selling light fixtures and motorized shades together makes complete sense. Waltham Lighting Consultant Susan Arnold says “ I would like to see shades as the fourth layer of lighting – Accent, Task, Ambient, and Natural Lighting”, where shades can lend additional control of how much light enters a room.

Tech Lighting Dazzles

Posted on Aug 11, 2017 by admin

We're big fans of Tech Lighting, and for good reasons:

  1. Tech Lighting offers excellent designs. Their on-trend unique fixtures always look fabulous and come in a variety of gorgeous finishes.
  1. Tech Lighting is an established manufacturer of low-voltage fixtures. Tech Lighting's monorail and low-voltage pendant systems make it easy to add plenty of light to your kitchen, bar, breakfast nook, dining room, and other areas of your home.
  1. Tech Lighting knows how to use LEDs. With the invention of LED, they have pushed the envelope further, with fantastic LED options (both integral fixtures and retrofit lamps) that provide excellent light output and quality.
  1. Tech Lighting offers easy-to-build systems. With a pendant, choose your canopy, fixture, and light source (LED or halogen). Monorail can be a decorative alternative to track lighting.
  1. Tech Lighting has expanded its lines. Tech Lighting has branched out to include bathroom lighting, line voltage decorative fixtures (e.g., flush mounts, sconces), and outdoor lighting as well.

While Tech Lighting produces fantastic decorative fixtures, it also manufactures ELEMENT—a cutting edge line of recessed architectural fixtures featuring high CRI and warm dim recessed lights in a variety of apertures and lighting outputs.

Lighting Controls 101

Posted on May 26, 2017 by admin

The idea behind "smarter" homes is that you streamline and automate processes, which provide many benefits. Lighting controls are just one aspect of smart home technology.

When you implement lighting controls in your home, you can count on…

  • Efficiency. Turn multiple fixtures on and off from multiple locations. Set "trims." For example, you can dictate how bright your fixtures get or limit how far a fixture can dim down. Connect your lighting controls with other home technologies. For example, program your motorized shades in your south-facing windows to let light and warmth in during the winter and then have your lights slowly come on when the sun goes down.

Vintage Bathroom Lighting that WOWs

Posted on May 20, 2017 by admin

A couple of years ago, we wrote about the vintage lighting trend—a trend that shows no signs of stopping. Think Edison-style bulbs, classic glass shapes, and metallic details.

Today, we're going to look at vintage bathroom lighting fixtures. But first, a couple of quick positioning tips:

  • Place single sconces on either side of a mirror for flattering, even illumination of the face.
  • Mount and center 2-, 3-, or 4-light vanity lights above your mirror. Most can face up or down depending on your preference. (But it's always good to check first.)

Now onto some of our current favorites. These vintage bathroom vanity lights from Quoizel and Hinkley pack a lot of personality and character into one fixture, so swapping them into your bathroom (along with some new paint or wallpaper) can be a quick and easy way to spruce up your space.

1. Quoizel "Trilogy" 2-Light Vanity. This bathroom vanity light pays homage to Thomas Edison with a vintage inspired filament bulb that is not only nostalgic but also very chic. With the classic Brushed Nickel finish and the clear seedy glass shade, Trilogy brings old world style into the 21st century. See it on display in our Allston showroom.
