Landscape Lighting Ideas: A Wolfers Q&A

Posted on Mar 27, 2015 by Andrea

After the winter we've had here in Boston, we're itching to get outside and start gardening, mowing, trimming, and adding those decorative touches that can turn an outdoor space from meh to WOW.

One of the ways to accomplish this transformation is through a smart landscape lighting strategy. Below is a Q&A with one of our fabulous lighting consultants, Jeff Livingston.

Jeff shares some important insights and fun landscape lighting ideas.

Q: When people visit one of the Wolfers lighting showrooms, should they bring pictures of their home's exterior, backyard, and front yard? How will the Wolfers lighting consultants work with customers to develop a landscape lighting strategy?

A: Plans and pictures are always helpful, since they highlight important elements such as garden beds, trees, footpaths, and fences.

When putting your plans together, make sure the plans include those elements as well as the location of any existing electrical receptacles.

Spotlight on Philips LED Lighting Products

Posted on Mar 20, 2015 by Andrea

Philips is a brand name that's synonymous with quality lighting. Founded in 1891 in the Netherlands, Philips quickly became the largest producer of light bulbs in the world.

Today, Philips continues to innovate by leading the way in digital lighting technologies. The company says on its website, "We are enhancing people's lives with light by delivering innovative and energy efficient solutions to consumers and professional customers, every day, everywhere."

Of course, one can't talk about energy efficient lighting solutions without talking about LEDs (light-emitting diodes).

LEDs emit more lumens per watt than incandescent light bulbs, and the size and shape of the LED light fixture doesn't affect its efficiency. In addition to energy efficiency, there are many other reasons to make the switch to LEDs, including the fact that well-made LEDs are more durable, longer lasting, and provide more versatility (not to mention northeast energy supplier Eversource offers incentives and rebates to encourage the use of LEDs). Wolfers has invested in lighting labs in both of our showrooms that cater to educating consumers on LEDs: how they work, how they look, and what your options are.

Choosing LED Recessed Lighting for Your Kitchen

Posted on Mar 12, 2015 by admin

At Wolfers, we're big fans of LED lighting technology because of its many benefits.

  • LEDs last longer than most incandescent light bulbs and CFLs because they don't have a filament that will burn out.
  • LEDs don't produce as much heat as regular incandescent or halogen bulbs.
  • LEDs typically last longer than incandescent bulbs and CFLs and most halogen bulbs.
  • LEDs offer much more versatility in design, thanks to their small size and numerous color options.
  • LEDs offer rebate incentives. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts offers incentives and rebates to encourage the use of LEDs

For these reasons, LEDs are an ideal option for recessed lighting in your kitchen (or any other area of your home, for that matter).

Designer Lighting Brands: Spotlight on Sonneman Lighting

Posted on Mar 06, 2015 by Andrea

While he may be in his early 70s, Robert Sonneman doesn't show any signs of slowing down or taking a break from his lifelong passion: designing lighting that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

In 1961 at the age of 19, Sonneman began his illustrious career under the watchful gaze of lighting and accessory retailer George Kovacs, who introduced young Robert to Modernism. Today, Sonneman describes himself as a "modernist with a historical sensibility," a point of view that has served him well over the last five decades.

Sonneman has won numerous product and design awards. He's taught countless protégés at places like Pratt and Parsons. And he's displayed his work at revered institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Since 1967, he's sold thousands of his own designs worldwide, and in 2003, at 61 years young, Sonneman launched his own brand: SONNEMAN – A Way of Light.

A way of light, indeed.

At Wolfers Lighting, Sonneman is one of our favorite and most popular brands, and no wonder. We love Sonneman's commitment to form and function along with the clean lines his work his famous for. Here are some of our top Sonneman picks, ideal for many areas of the home.
